prickle

A short woody pointed outgrowth from the epidermis of a plant. It may be simply protective, as in Gunnera, or it may also help the plant become hooked to a support, as do the recurved prickles of roses and brambles. A prickle is a modified multicellular trichome. Compare spine , thorn.
