primary thickening meristem

A *meristem that is found in certain monocotyledons, such as palms, below the leaf primordia at the apex. It serves to increase the width of the stem behind the apex by cutting off rows of cells by periclinal divisions. Prolonged primary growth, due to the activity of this meristem, allows some monocotyledons to attain considerable stature.
