primordium

Any immature part of a plant destined to differentiate into a certain cell, tissue, or organ. The term is usually used of a part of the *apical meristem that later differentiates further. Thus a leaf primordium later differentiates into a leaf. In early stages of development the leaf primordium appears as a microscopic projection (leaf buttress ) from the shoot apex.
