protandry

The maturation of the male reproductive organs before those of the female. For example, in many members of the Compositae and Leguminosae the pollen is released from the anthers before the stigma in the same flower is receptive. Protandry is a consequence of the normal centripetal development of the floral parts and is the most frequently encountered form of *dichogamy. Compare protogyny.
