pseudocopulation

The attempt by a male insect to mate with a flower, or parts of a flower, which it mistakes, because of the colouring, shape, or scent of the flower, for a female of the same species. During pseudocopulation pollination of the flower is achieved. This pollination mechanism can be observed frequently in the orchid family. See also entomophily.
