pyrenoid

A darkly staining proteinaceous body in the chloroplasts of many algae and of the Anthocerotae. In most cases it has a dense granular matrix and is surrounded by tightly packed starch plates. In euglenoid algae the core is traversed by lamellae similar to those in the chloroplast and the pyrenoid is surrounded by paramylum granules.
