red light

Electromagnetic radiation of approximately 630 nm wavelength. Light in this part of the spectrum is the most effective in initiating various light-dependent reactions in plants. For example, short-day plants are prevented from flowering if given a short burst of red light during the dark period. Similarly red light is best for promoting germination in light-sensitive seeds and for reversing etiolation. Compare far-red light. See phytochrome.
