red tropical soil

A type of zonal *soil formed in rain forests, and in savanna with alternating dry and wet seasons. It is heavily leached but a balance is maintained between the nutrients produced by decomposition and those taken up by the plants. The red colour is due to the presence of iron, magnesium, and aluminium oxides. Some red tropical soils may form a hard crust of chemicals on the surface.
