respiration

The oxidative breakdown of food substances within the cells of living organisms, resulting in the liberation of energy for subsequent use in growth, etc. The process usually involves the absorption of molecular oxygen, and water and carbon dioxide are typically end products. The reactions involved occur in two stages, *glycolysis and the *TCA cycle. See also aerobic respiration , anaerobic respiration.
