root hair

A *trichome originating from the *piliferous layer of the root. Root hairs are projections from single epidermal cells in direct contact with the soil and serve to increase the surface area for absorption. They are responsible for the first stage in absorption of water and solutes from the soil. They are also thought to help retain contact between the root tip and the soil when dry conditions tend to cause the soil to contract away from the roots.
