seaweed

Any of various macroscopic marine *algae found on rocky coasts or free floating in the sea. Species occurring in the intertidal zone are periodically exposed to the air and have developed leathery mucilaginous thalli to prevent desiccation. Most seaweeds belong to the *Phaeophyta or *Rhodophyta. See also phytoplankton.
