selective

Describing herbicides that kill some plants and not others. Usually broad-leaved plants are killed while narrow-leaved plants are unaffected. Selective weedkillers are therefore useful for cereal crops and lawns. Some selective weedkillers, e.g. Simazine, kill germinating plants but not well established shrubs. See also systemic.
