senescence

The period between maturity and death of a plant or plant part. A gradual deterioration occurs and, in the case of senescent leaves and fruits, the end point is usually *abscission from the plant. Senescence is characterized by an accumulation of waste metabolic products, a decrease in dry weight as reusable substances are withdrawn from the affected part, and a rise in the respiratory rate (see climacteric).
