sieve area

A specialized part of the primary wall of a *sieve element , perforated by a number of pores, derived from a *primary pit field. These pores are lined with *callose and penetrated by cytoplasmic strands. The sieve areas of gymnosperm *sieve cells are relatively unspecialized, whereas those of angiosperm *sieve tubes are usually differentiated as *sieve plates.
