stoma

(stomate, pl. stomata) A pore in the epidermis of aerial parts of a plant, providing a means for gaseous exchange between the internal tissues and the atmosphere. Each stomatal pore is surrounded by a pair of *guard cells. The term is often used to refer to the epidermal pore with its associated guard cells. Stomata are very numerous, often more so on the lower surface of leaves than the upper surface.
