syndiploidy

A doubling of the chromosome number through a fault in the mitotic process. Commonly there is either failure of spindle formation at anaphase or failure to form a dividing wall between the two daughter cells. If such cells continue to divide normally an autopolyploid   segment   of   tissue   may arise in the plant. If this develops flowers, autopolyploid seeds may result.
