terra rossa

A type of intrazonal soil rich in lime (calcimorphic) from the underlying limestone. It is a clayey soil with a low humus content and its bright red colour results from large amounts of iron oxides. It may be found in regions of Spain, southern France, and southern Italy. Compare rendzina.
