threonine

A polar amino acid with the formula CH3CH(OH)CH(NH2)COOH. The biosynthetic pathway of threonine follows that of methionine from aspartic acid to the formation of homogentisic acid, at which point the two pathways diverge. Breakdown occurs via *glycine and acetyl CoA. Isoleucine is synthesized from threonine.
