tiller

A shoot that develops from axillary or adventitious buds at the base of a stem, often in response to injury of the main stem. Tillering is seen when the trunk of a tree is lopped, as in the practice of coppicing. It is also characteristic of the growth of grasses, giving the tufted appearance of many species.
