torus

1. The thickened central part of the pit membrane in the *bordered pits of many gymnosperms, consisting of primary cell wall material. The torus is believed to act as a valve, blocking the pit when there is an inequality of pressure on either side of the pit, as is the case when an adjacent tracheary element is damaged.
