triplet

A sequence of three nucleotides on a DNA or messenger RNA molecule. Most of the 64 possible triplets (see genetic code ) code for amino acids (see codon). However a few act as 'start' signals while others act as 'stop' signals to begin and end a polypeptide chain (see nonsense triplets ).
