tropane alkaloids

A group of alkaloids derived from the amino acid ornithine. They include hyoscyamine and its stereoisomer atropine, both solanaceous alkaloids. These are prepared from Datura stramonium (thorn apple) and Atropa belladonna (deadly nightshade) respectively. The cocaine alkaloids, derived from the leaves of Erythroxylum coca and E. novagranatense (coca), are also examples.
