turgor

The state existing in a plant cell when, due to the intake of water by osmosis, the protoplast exerts an outward pressure on the cell wall. When the cell is fully turgid, although the pressure is sufficient to make the wall bulge, the wall is strong enough to prevent more expansion and the further ingress of water. Turgidity is the main factor in maintaining rigidity and support in unlignified parts of the plant.
