uracil

A pyrimidine base, characteristically present in RNA and absent from DNA. The positions held by uracil in RNA are occupied by thymine in DNA; uracil is thus said to 'replace' thymine during RNA synthesis. Uracil, more properly called 2,4-dioxypyrimidine, is derived ultimately from sugars and amino acids.
