velamen

The multiple *epidermis of the aerial roots of many orchids, aroids, and other monocotyledons. It consists of densely packed cells that lack living protoplasts and have thickened walls. In wet weather these cells become filled with water but it is not certain whether or not the velamen performs an absorptive function.
