viroid

An extremely small infectious agent consisting solely of RNA with no enclosing coat or capsid. Viroids have been isolated from various plants in which they are able to replicate and cause characteristic disease symptoms. Examples are potato spindle tuber viroid, chrysanthemum chlorotic mottle viroid, hop stunt viroid, and avocado sun-blotch viroid.
