Wallace effect

The idea, proposed by the naturalist A. R. Wallace, that reproductive barriers within a species may be developed and subsequently improved by selection. If there are a number of optimum phenotypes favoured by selection,  intermediate  organisms  less  fitted to the environment will be eliminated by natural selection. Thus hybrids between such phenotypes will be at a disadvantage and hybridization will be selected against.
