xerosere

A pioneer plant community that develops in a dry region. A lithosere develops on bare rock, beginning with simple plant forms, such as lichens. Soil building and accumulation of organic matter continue so that xero-phytic herbs develop followed by *mesophytes , such as hardy herbaceous plants and even larger woody plants. A psam-mosere develops on bare *sand dunes and a *halosere on coastal mud flats and salt marshes. See also sere.
