xylan

A polysaccharide in which the major monosaccharide subunit is xylose. Xylans are abundant components of the *hemicelluloses. In monocotyledonous plants the dominant hemicellulose is an arabinoxylan, in which arabinose side chains are attached to a backbone of xylose residues.
