EDTA

(ethylenediamine tetra-acetic acid) A compound that reversibly binds iron, magnesium, and other positive ions, i.e. that acts as a chelating agent. Used in culture media complexed with iron it slowly releases iron into the medium as required. It may also act as a noncompetitive inhibitor of certain enzymes that require metal ions as cofactors.
