fission

A method of *asexual reproduction in which the nucleus and then the cytoplasm splits into equal parts to form new individuals genetically identical to the parent. It is seen in many microorganisms, such as bacteria and the fission yeasts (Schizosaccharomyces). The new cells may often sporulate in adverse conditions. The parent usually divides into two equal parts (binary fission). Compare budding , fragmentation.
