growth

The sum total of the various physiological processes that combine to cause an increase in the dry weight of an organism and an irreversible increase in size. In most plants, growth is accomplished by the assimilation and fixation of inorganic substances from the surrounding environment. In contrast to animal growth, plant growth is usually confined to *meristems , where cell division occurs, and to the regions adjacent to these where *cell extension takes place.
