satellite

(trabant) A spherical body seen attached to one end of a chromosome arm by a narrow filament at mitotic metaphase. Often a pair of satellites are apparent. Usually satellites are only found on one or two chromosomes but occasionally more are found. The number and position of satellites are one of the features of the *karyotype. The satellite stalk functions as a *nucleolar organizer.
